“Esfa”, a Murray Darling Carpet Python had the misfortune to swallow a set of Harley Davidson keys.
X-rays revealed the keys had passed into her stomach. They had to be surgically removed.
The keys had lacerated her oesophagus (throat) and caused some bleeding as they passed through this narrow passage into her stomach.
She was anaesthetised and underwent over one hour of surgery to remove the keys.
For two weeks after the surgery she was stomach tubed with fluids and medication to help the damaged oesophagus heal.
She recovered well after the surgery – However, she won’t be able to eat until her internal lacerations heal.
FAQs
A snake may suffer from lacerations to the oesophagus and the object may also cause some bleeding as it passes through the narrow passage into their stomach.
You should take your pet snake to a reptile vet as soon as possible. To find one you can search for a “snake veterinarian near me” or a “reptile vet near me” to find a qualified professional in your area. The vet will examine the snake and typically perform an x-ray to see what object it has ingested. Surgery will usually be required to remove the object.
To prevent such incidents, it’s essential to monitor your snake’s environment closely, remove any small objects that could be accidentally ingested, and supervise your snake during feedings to ensure it only consumes appropriate prey.
How on earth did those get in there???
